It could be a bad tilt trim motor or corrosion on the wiring andor terminals. I would mark the cables to note the connection to your relay or terminals. Take some pictures at various angles.

Several of my friends with same or similar motors have noticed same problem. Keep the trim rams fully retracted when not in use to prevent corrosion build-up. Engage the tilt lock mechanism built into the outboards bracket or install a Yamaha engine support to hold the engine in the tilt-up position.

Yesterday when I went to go out the motor lowered to about 90 down and then started to slow down and sputterthen stop at about 95 down. I have ran into this before the best was to find your problem is go to the back of the boat and use the trim on the motor and when you push the switch tap the trim motor with a smal hammer and push the button repeatedly. If it starts to work then the tilt motor is junk may have water in it or may have a bad spot in the motor.
Sometimes you can bang on the power tilt and trim motor with the head of a screwdriver or wrench and itll knock some of the corrosion off the brushes and the engine will then go up and down. October 2011 in Boating 1. If my 2005 Yamaha F90 sits for a couple of weeks the up tilt and trim wont work unless I start the engine. Then it works fine unless it sits for a while again.

My F225 TXRC Power Tilt and Trim is having issues in the down direction. Before I took it apart the power tilt would work normally in the down direction and then the power trim would work normally in the down direction for about 12 of the stroke and then the PT motor would make the sound like it.
