Make sure the solinoid ground is intact. Apply 12 volts to the 18Ga blue and then green wires. If the solinoid clicks and has voltage and the trim motor still does not work odds are high the relay failed internally.
If you removed the large green and blue wires from the relay and applied power ground to them then you did indeed directly test the motor. And if it did not then run the motor is the problem. And btw the trim gauge and its indicating sensor are completely separate from the trimtilt mechanism - so thats a separate different issue.
If you see fluid on the outside of the PTT unit or if your outboard wont stay tilted up or stay tilted out when running it may mean that the seals or internal valves are in need of inspection. Have the unit inspected by an authorized Yamaha Marine dealer and if necessary disassembled and repaired. With the blue and green wire removed from the relay I get 128 volts and negative 128 volts when operating the switches but with the wires connected I was getting nothing.
I do not think it is a switch problem as both switches do the same thing. Also when hooking the trim motor up direct it will travel in both directions with no issues. Jun 23 2018.
The seal you see is the dust seal. Inside that is the oil seal and what is leaking is the piston seal. Replace all of them.
The kit will have the entire selection of seals. Hopefully the corrosion on yours isnt bad because they can be hard to remove. Hydraulic pump assembly problems. Hydraulic fluid doesnt evaporate so if you can hear the trim motor running but your outboard wont tilt up you likely have a leak. You can replace the fluid as a short-term fix but youll likely have to get the leak fixed by a Yamaha Certified Mechanic although sometimes the leak is so tiny that it takes several months for enough fluid to leak out of the system to impact the power tilt and trim.
As the motor runs the trim rams slowly come up followed by the tilt. Once they are all the way up Put the cap back on the reservoir and then trim back down. I think you are not allowing enough air in the system to bleed it out properly.

First off it sounds like you have air in the system so it needs to be fully upcochoked up in place then open the filler cap and top it off. Leave it like that for about 15 mins before putting cap back on and lowering it down etc. Also the noise could be from a semi-corroded main tilt tube.

I have ran into this before the best was to find your problem is go to the back of the boat and use the trim on the motor and when you push the switch tap the trim motor with a smal hammer and push the button repeatedly.
