There is a recurring leak of fluid in my Yamaha 150-HP outboard engines trim and tilt not from the ram seals and not from the manual relief valve screw. Would take 20-30 seconds sometimes at the ramp before it would lift the motor.
The power trim and tilt has a two stage operation.

A guy at the marina said the source of the leak of fluid could be from the check valves. He said the check valves in the trim and tilt actuator were on the back of the unit meaning toward. I have a 1997 yamaha 150 salt water series outboard.
I am having problems with my tilt trim it works fine raising and holding plane but when i try to trim down while not moving in the water i have problems to trim down also the motor will kick up when hard in reverse. The lower stage which I assume is the problem is slow but powerfull to trim the motor down or suck it down on the water in choppy conditions. The upper stage is just to trim the motor out. I have ran into this before the best was to find your problem is go to the back of the boat and use the trim on the motor and when you push the switch tap the trim motor with a smal hammer and push the button repeatedly. If it starts to work then the tilt motor is junk may have water in it or may have a bad spot in the motor. Keep adjusting the Yamahas trim.
