I would check all your wiring that terminates into the key panel especially the run from your tach. Sometimes the overheat alarm goes off and sometimes it doesnt.
Moreover the starter can also overheat if you crank your engine for more than 10 seconds.

Under 4000-RPM engine speed the engine will run all day without causing an overheat alarm. When the alarm goes off the temperature gauge indicator is still not even half. It is very common problem in salt water and in muddy or sandy waters.
It is located on the back exhaust cover in the bottom aft of the motor. Water temp high of 171 degrees. Pulled new t stat today just because and it opens at about 150 degrees. Checked the thermoswitch and it checked fine with voltmeter per Yamaha spec.

I have a 99 Vmax that overheats when idling. He replaced the waterpump twice but still does it. It seams as the pee stream is steady but not really strong.
Just when idling like waiting for the trailer. Cant find anything wrong with it though. As soon as I turn it off the remaining water comes out very hot.
I changed the thermostat and am still having the same problem. On the earmuffs it of course has the same problem. The water flushing out of the lower unit is warm but from the pee hole is cold.
