Pumps themselves can go bad I have seen the pump head leak or a leak in the O Rings or washerseals in the connection to the pumps input bad place for an air leak or the tanks outlet.
Operate the pump to at least 40 psi with all water turned off. Presumably the switch will not turn off per your problem statement. If the pump doesnt shut off at 40 psi with a reliable gauge stop the pump.
Observe the gauge to see that it is not losing pressure as with a leak or a foot valve failure. To remove an airlock turn the power off so the pump stops running. Open the cold taps and drop the pump back into the water.
If possible turn the pump upside down under the water to allow any air inside to escape. Just wanted to clarify something first I have a onoff switch for the water pump. The pump runs all the time when I turn it on.

Crud in the faucet. I get crud plastic bits from the tank etc. That get between the faucet handle rubber gasket and the brass base of the faucet.
Thats all it takes and the pump wonnt shut off. I shut off the pump power pull the faucet handle and clean the crud out and it stops. I read that pumps sometimes dont turn off if a tank is empty so I checked all all tanks are fine.
I went up to run a tap and make sure water is flowing it was. When I first turned on the tap the colour water was running so hot from the hot pump that the water was literally almost boiling and steaming hot out of the tap. Hotter than the HWS.

As a consequence of the air the pump runs very inefficiently or doesnt actually pump at all but while its attempting to pump it sounds like water running through it isnt its air cavitating around the impellers. Turn off the FW pump when you leave the boat in case a leak develops while youre gone. Be sure to turn off the hot water heater also because if a leak develops downstream of the heater the pump will just keep pumping away until all the water is gone at which time your heating element may well burn out.
