Sealing the gear oil inside the gearcase and keeping water from intruding into the gearcase are the two aims of all the shaft seals o-rings spaghetti seals and gaskets in a lower unit. Last year when I changed my lower unit oil I inadvertantly forgot a teflon washer on one of the plugs.

Water in lower unit mercury. What causes water to get in lower unit. Since the motor is only 3 years old and assumming you have run it moderately or less and you have changed the oil previously it may well be as the last post reply - vent andor fill plug. What ever you do dont operate the motor with water in the lower unit. Eventually you will have only water in the lower unit with no gear lube. Then destruction of the lower unit gears bearings and shafts quickly follow.
If you know that you have water in the unit drain the lower unit and refill with fresh lube. If you have water in the lower unit itll come out of the bottom hole not the top. Water is heavier than oil and sinks to the bottom.
The engine would have to sit a couple of days to let the water settle however. Posted 07-30-2004 0802 PM ET US. You have to change that oil and find out were it is leaking If the problem is not address the water will ruin the lower unit gears drain the oilwater mix and put fresh oil back in.
The lower unit needs to come off the engine the water pump seals and area need to be checked so have your pump changedreplaced. The higher your motor is mounted raising the lower unit out of the water the less drag. Of course another good reason you need low water intakes to keep the water pressure for cooling at proper pressures.
Jack plates can also be used to adjust the setback or how far back the motors. Lower units should NOT have water in the lower units ever. Remove the lower unit take it to a dealer and have them either fix your lower unit or replace it.
Folks do this every day. If you want to risk having to replace the entire lower unit that you may not have to do right now - get it fixed. May 7 2017 at 458 pm 1692741.
Found water in lower unit when winterizing 1999 Evenrude 90 HP 2-stroke. Took to dealer who pressure tested and said it was OKThought maybe oil plug not tight enough. They put new grease and plug gaskets in.
Used this spring six or eight times and decided to check today. Found full of water again. One of the challenges with our Project 150 Mercury four stroke is the stock gearcase doesnt have a low water pickup.
For large number of consumers this is not a problem. But for those running a lighter faster hull looking to squeeze more speed out of any stock engine a low water pickup. Well I just put a new 175 ProXS on a 1985 185 shallow sport classic I rebuilt and I am having the same problem with the water pressure.
At idle it runs 7psi at 4000 RPMs 30MPH it runs 10-12 PSI. Once I get between 5000 and 6000 RPMs 40-50MPH fully loaded it jumps to 12-16 PSI but once I start to jack it up trim it out or turn to the right. Mercury Lower Unit Parts Diagram.

There are seals on the drive shaft under the water pump seal on the impeller housingcap prop shaft. The oil that comes out as you drain the lower unit can tell you a lot about whats going on inside the gearcase. Milky lower unit oil means you have water in the oil which means youve lost a seal somewhere.
The first place to look is the output seals which are found behind the propeller. 01-26-2014 0811 AM. Changed the oil in the lower unit of my 90 hp Johnson 2 stroke last weekend.
When I took out the bottom screw about 12 pint of water poured out first and then the oil. Took the prop off and looked at the prop seals which seem fine no nicks no oil had been leaking out and there was no fishing line etc. The water leaking between the lower unit and the exhaust housing is normal.
The water running down the inside of the exhaust housing is getting between where the 2 join this is not a water tight seal. There is no reason for concern. Post back with questions.

Looks like the water is running down the front side of the mid section and draining out the lowest pointhole at the top of your lower unit. Check the O-ringgrommet and the fit at the top of your riser tubes.

Its the portion of the outboard that receives the rotation and power from the engines powerhead to transfer it to the propeller and prop shaft. The propeller rotates which allows your boat to move either forward or backwards through the water. Lower Unit Noise Is It Normal It should not be chattering from my experience.
Take the prop off and run it and see if that makes a difference and inspect the shaft for crud and fishing line that the prop might be rubbing on. You should not run it in gear above an idle on muffs and really not a good idea period with the prop on. 1995 115hp mercury outboard I have taken my lower unit off to replace the water pump got all that replaced and put back together now I seem to be having a problem with the motor shifting in gears when I put it back together and now Im afraid Ive moved the gearshift in the lower unit so many times that Im not sure where I Am at position wise fed or reverseit also seems that when the lower unit is in and I use the actual control box shifter I get different results than when I have the lower.
