Most likely a corroded and stuck-open thermostat. I have a 1995 GMC K1500 Z71 350 TBI.
You may be able to free it by pushing the center back and forth till there is no longer any resitance but it needs to be replaced.
Temperature gauge keeps going up and down. A common reason your car temperature gauge goes up and down and no heat is emitted is that your cooling system is faulty. You may want to check out clogged components such as the heater core radiator hose coolant level thermostat or water pump. The coolant passageway might be blocked with sediments or rust.
Reasons Why Your Cars Temperature Gauge Goes Up and Down There are several reasons to why your car cant keep the ideal working temperature. These are the most common issues you can encounter. Faulty Temperature Gauge This is the simplest issue to fix and the least dangerous one for your cars health too.
My temperature gauge keeps going up and down when. Pull off the hose at the top of the motor if you can see the thermostat try pushing on the center with a screwdriver it is most likely stuck open. You may be able to free it by pushing the center back and forth till there is no longer any resitance but it needs to be replaced.
If the change is rather quick and jumps around the gauge for no apparent reason then it may be a faulty temperature sensor. If this is the case replace it because it will put undue stress on an electrical cooling fan with frequent starting and stopping. Most likely a corroded and stuck-open thermostat.

Check all the hose tensions re-bleed the system and for the next few drives but the car in Diag mode and watch the coolant temp on the digital readout as well as the gauge. Should be around the 91 to 105 degrees mark under this is generally warming up time though it could drop to 85 degrees on highway and colder days.
The temperature gauge keeps going up and down from 140 to 230 degrees and back. The radiator was replaced because of a leak. On October 23 2016.
Ok so my temp gauge is fluctuating sometimes alot more then some it goes all the way up to overheat then goes back down to normal i just replaced thermo stat burped the radiator then a little bit ago it started fluctuating alot more and now when i get done driving it theres alot of antifreeze in the overflow tank and i. If the needle goes to about the middle of the gauge that means the engine has reached normal operating temperature usually between 180 an 210F. It goes up quickly after starting then stabilizes.
The one on the rad is the fan switch I believe. The temp sensor should be on upper hose neck on the engine. Check your coolant level and leak.
Air pocket will mess up the sensor reading. In this weather the thermostat should be open all the time anyway. I have a 1995 GMC K1500 Z71 350 TBI.
Gauge fluctuates constantly between normal and 210 in cool weather 40 below. Also during accleration it will rise to 210 and drop back down never staying at a constant temp. It constantly moves between normal and 210 exempt during summer time it stays steady.
I have a 2007 B7 30 TDi with 135000 miles and currently when on the motorway cruising at 65-75 mph the temperature gauge fluctuates to over 100 goes into limp mode so I slow down and the temperature quickly returns to 90 and limp mode turns off. On a couple of occasions the coolant level warning light has come on too. If your temp gauge is not staying stable it keeps going up and down and you have PO300 code you will have to troubleshoot the problem until you find a solu.
You may be able to free it by pushing the center back and forth till there is no longer any resitance but it needs to be replaced. As for the temp sensor if it is bad the guage will flicker representing a bad connection. If the gauge just rises and falls by pattern the sensor and wiring is probably fine.
Posted on Mar 28 2010 Anonymous Master. If the cooling system is building up excessive pressure then this is often a sign of cylinder pressure entering the cooling system. The ECT sensor is also a culprit for the excessive reading you can test the sensor using a multimeter and a boiling pot of water.
I recently bought a 99 infiniti i30 and it runs good but for some reason the temperature gauge keeps going up and down even 2 minutes up the road when I leave in the morning it does it. Its not overheating though it just jumps we checked the radiator and all the fluids checked the thermostat and housing cleaned the sensor line even replaced the radiator cap but it keeps doing it. The gauge should register 90C and shouldnt vary regardless of outside temp or load.
If the gauge varies noticeably then either the thermostat is defective or the sensor is defective. If you still have warranty get it checked. Read the last post in this thread.
What temperature does your W204 run at. What is normal running temperature. One very cold morning zero degrees Fafter sitting in the drive way all night the coolant temp gauge started fluxuating while I was driving.
Up until this time the truck would always sit at 210 degree any time of the year. On this day it warmed up to 210 then would go to 230 then go back down to 190 then back up to 210. Run it for 20 minutes or so til the temp comes up to normal about 190 or so with the cap off then fill radiator to top if needed and reinstall cap.
That should burp out any air if there is any in there. If that dosnt work then worry about spending money on parts. Gasket has been replaced at that time but after 600 hundred km without any issue i am facing this constant problem of the temperature gauge going crazy and for whatever reason it comes from 90 steady up to 120 in about 30 to 40 seconds and then it comes back down while im still driving and then all the cycle again up and down up and down.
Vauxhall Astra E - Temperature Gauge Going up and DOWN while driving. While driving my Temp Gauge goes from zero upto just over 80 and then drops back down to just above the two white notches at the bottom far left of the gauge. It keeps going up and down like this while Im driving.
Ive had my car MOTd at a Vauxhall dealership and mentioned this problem to themat the time. Replacement thermostats come in varying temperature ranges and you can typically go up or down 10 degrees to fine-tune engine temperature for the application. For instance you may opt to use a 170-degree thermostat in place of the recommended 180-degree thermostat if you do a lot of towing or a 190-degree thermostat if you want to pick up a.
Temperature gage keeps going up and down. 2002 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX. Had the thermostat changed but now is worse.
Sometimes temperature doesnt want to come down for a while. Have the same problem.
