The guy that had it crack probalbly didnt buy a long enough hose or cut it to short. They are commonly referred to as spring clamps because they apply constant tension on the rubber hose. Automobile manufacturers use spring clamps on cooling system hoses because havent found a better or cheaper way to apply tension to the hose regardless of the hoses condition.
This matters because as the hoses age they may harden soften. Instead of using the reducers in the kit I find that it is better to go to the auto store and buy a radiator hose that reduces down after the opening. I basically found a hose that was the same size as the stainless steel flex hose and then about three inches back.
