I purchased a SE116 Lower Unit and I am in the process of breaking it in. I put the first 5 hours on it not going above 75 throttle. Now it says for the next 5 hours to run full throttle for short periods.
You can get it on plane and just stay below 75 percent throttle but for the best break in I would still do a few hours at lower rpm. 1000 1500 then 2000. After that then get up on plane and then run on plane for the rest.

Ive been beating the crap out of my SEI upper and lower Alpha 1 Gen 2 for the past two years and my ONLY compaint is the quality of the paint which is peeling in a couple of small spots. Its my opinion that most of the failures you hear about with these drives are caused by incompetent installation andor break-in. This means that the unit is covered for any failure that requires the drive to be repaired or replaced.
Run it without lubrication crash into a stump suck up some fishing line it does not matter the SEI drive is always covered. SEI believes this warranty is one of the best warranties ever offered for a stern drive or a outboard lower unit. Peace of mind while on the water is.

In the aftermarket sterndrive business SEI is a leading company and also has its own outboards. I after 57 hours my season is over. I just drained the SEI lower unit and after 47 hours I did a 10 hour lube change per break-in it has no water in the oil and a very small amount of metal on the magnetic drain plug.
