The pump behind the wheel is leaking a small amount of oil. I think it is coming out of the filler cap which seems to be vented. Herere the instructions for purging a Sea Star system.

I purchased the Seal Kit and and asking for direction as to how to remove the wheel and replace the seals. The original Seastar Hydraulic Helm Steering on my 95 Proline 190 CC is leaking down the outside of the console under the steering wheel. The unit is either a HH5270 HH5271 or HH5272 - its a real bear to get up inside the console to look.
Spoke to Seastar and they suggested purchasing a HP6032 Service Kit along with a Fill. Born Again Boating Clothing. It appears the hydraulic pump is leaking as I cannot see any fluid in the vent hole.
Is there any easy fix to this problem or do I need to replace the pump unit. It is a Sea Star I unit and came installed when the boat was purchased new in 1992. Thanks in advance for any help.

Over the past season or two Ive become aware that it takes more. As a final check ensure unrestricted movement of the steering system and hoses at all trimtilt positions. Confirm that the engines are turning in the right direction and make sure there are no leaks from connections fittings seals and hoses.

Posted 07-07-2003 0105 PM ET US I recently replaced my Seastar pump with a newer higher-volume pump. I made the switch because the only pump took over five turns to go from lock to lock. The newer pump the 54 was supposed to go lock to lock in about 36 turns so I upgraded instead of investing.
Take a close look at the seals and wipers and check for any bends nicks or damage to the steering ram shaft.
