Posted 06-11-2003 0829 PM ET US Yesterday while working on the boat in the driveway I noticed that the primer bulb was not hard so I squeezed it a few times to fill it with fuel. It just cant suck fuel thru because there is none getting to the bulb.
The primer bulb never really gets hard because the fuel pump is sucking rather than pushing fuel through the bulb so there is no pressure being built up in the bulb.
Outboard primer bulb not getting hard. Primer ball wont get hard. Re the float needle post. If your floats are jammed down for some reason unlikely that all of them would be the float wil not lift as fuel enters the carb bowl therefore the float needle valve will not shut and fuel will continue to flow into the carb while you are pumping the fuel line bulb.
Could be air stuck in your fuel lines. Had this happen to me once before I pulled the fuel line off the engine and pumped into a jar until my primer bulb was full of fuel. Put it back on and had no problems.
It could also just be a bad primer bulb but that there was enough fuel in the lines to start the engine and then the fuel pump did the rest. Primer bulbs do not work well if there is lots of air and no fuel. I spent over one hour getting my new boat primed.
You might try running the hose and bulb to a can of gas lots of things can go bad with can of gas be careful and see if the motor will fill and firm up the bulb. If the primer bulb airlocks and wont seem to get any fuel. Disconnect the fuel line from the engine side of the bulb.
With the arrow pointing to the side where you pulled the hose off. Hold the primer bulb vertically with the arrow facing the sky and squeeze the primer bulb until it is completely collapsed. Then stick your finger on the hose barb.
Let go of the primer bulb. The primer bulb never really gets hard because the fuel pump is sucking rather than pushing fuel through the bulb so there is no pressure being built up in the bulb. If the bulb is getting sucked flat and such then that is a better indication of a restriction in the fuel line.
When the primer bulb isnt working it may be a problem with the bulb itself with the fuel lines that feed fuel to the bulb or both. The same goes for fuel lines. When theyve hardened and cracked they let in air which makes it impossible to draw the.
Once the main issues with squeeze bulbs are understood they are relatively easy to troubleshoot and fix. First check the bulb for aging loss of elasticity or cracking. Then check for leaks in the hose connections including the fitting on the tank.
This could be a number of things. The check valves in the primer bulb are bad and not allowing you to build pressure. The inlet needle in the carbs is stuck open or you have a bad diaphragm in one of the fuel pumps.
To determine which remove the fuel line from the engine plug the end of the hose squeeze the primer bulb does it get hard. Posted 06-11-2003 0829 PM ET US Yesterday while working on the boat in the driveway I noticed that the primer bulb was not hard so I squeezed it a few times to fill it with fuel. Then today after the boat had been sitting un-used for 24 hours again I felt the primer bulb and again I noticed that it was not hard.
It just cant suck fuel thru because there is none getting to the bulb. The alarms you are getting are probably just an indication that it has starved out of fuel. So apart from the primer bulb itself which I am not so sure is the problem from what you have told us there are some other common FAIL POINTS prior to the bulb to check and address as required.
How to check fuel flow on outboard - YouTube. Fuel Primer Bulb Wont Get Hard Try some Viagra. Wiredog 06-18-2012 0949 PM the arrow is pointing with the flow on the fuel line.
There is no up or down. WELL yes there is. The bulb has a one way valve in it so the fuel doesnt go back down the hose.
It needs to be pointed up to allow that ball to seat and block off the fuel. Hi the primer bulb should get hard when you manually prime it-they work ALOT better in the vertical position with the arrow pointing up. It will not stay hard while operating but if you can pump for that long then best replace the bulb with a genuine one-not a cheap aftermarket one-they.
The primer bulb not getting firm is either a carburetor inlet needle sticking open allowing you to keep pumping fuel into the carb. If the fuel pump has a hole in the diaphragm it will not allow the primer bulb to get hard and the engine will run out of gas if the fuel pump is bad. No oil alarm went off on my 40 horse Johnson outboard.
Finally if you are struggling to get your outboard running correctly you might consider looking at the fuel lines. Blocked fuel lines keep gas from getting to the engine. Most of the blockages start out partially.
In these cases simply pumping the primer bulb. Primer ball doesnt really stay hard during normal running the only reason it gets hard when you pump is the fuel system in the motor is full the float comes up and seals the needle valve normal operational height of fuel in the carb is below max fuel level thus soft ballalarm for as much as my pea brain knows on a 2 stroke is. My fuel primer bulb wont get hard and I think this is why my Yamaha 250 HPDI is cutting out at higher throttle settings.
I replaced the bulb and it will not get hard. Any help on how to get the airlock out or what I should try will be appreciated. Automotive road side assistance.

RECOGNIZING THE PROBLEM A blocked outboard fuel line prevents fuel from getting to the motor. It generally starts with a partial blockage where playing around with the fuel hose and pumping the primer bulb will get the motor to start or keep it running. But blockages dont cure themselves.
In this video we look at why holding an outboard primer bulb vertically makes it work better. This is because gravity acts on the one-way ball valves helping. One thing to check would be your primer ball.
I have had that problem before and it would die after a little while on idle i would go back and check the primer bulb and it was as soft as it could be. Pumped it up and it was good the rest of the day. It could be a slight crack or weathering in the bulb or the hose.
I would check that first then try some differnt fuel. Dont give it viagra gust play with itcash tag evest668. In this manner should primer bulb outboard stay hard.

Also Know is primer bulb necessary. A primer bulb is important because it is helps to fill the carburetor with the correct.
