Putting a new water pump on your Mercury outboard means tinkering with the engines peripheral workings that well keep it working. When replacing the lower gear housing I had to reposition the water feed tube slightly just nudged the end to the side about 14 inch to align it with the output port of the water pump.
Remove the bolts or nuts that are securing the impeller pump housing to the lower drive unit with a wrench. Pull the impeller pump housing up off of the drive shaft. If the housing appears stuck use a screwdriver to gently pry up the housing to loosen it.
