The engine started fine when I first prime the bulb to get gas to engine. Should there be gas behind the carbs.
First remove the fuel line from the carburetor and plug it so fuel does not run out.

Mercury outboards tend to leak fuel if the fuel lines are not disconnected after every use and the motor is tilted up in trailering position. I am not used to having to remove the fuel line at the motor connection to prevent this because I have never had an outboard. Carb leaking fuel.

I have a 90hp mercury outboard and it is leaking gas out of the botton carb. I took the carbs off and cleaned the bowl and pin but while I had the carbs off I pumped the fuel ball and gas comes out of the engine at the botton carb hole. Should there be gas behind the carbs.

When the engine runs the carbs float bowls are always full of a fuel oil mix. When you shut it off there is still a fuel oil mix inside of the float bowls. What happens is the carbs have main discharge nozzles in the center of them.
With the carburetor body held upside down the float being viewed from the side adjust the float so that the free end of the float the end opposite the hinge pin is ever so slightly higher just ever so slightly off level than the other end. And when viewed from the end make sure it is not cocked. I disagree–with a carburetor the fuel system is open to the air and if the carburetors are oriented in the right position they will leak fuel.
The degree to which this happens depends on the particular engine the carburetors and the orientation. My 1976 Mercury did this all the time if tilted all the way up. 26 Feb 2010.
My Mercury 35hp is acting up. It seems to dump fuel when the fuel is turned on. There is a small pipe from the top of the carburetor that appears to just spurt fuel out and dump it into the sea via a pipe running down to the base of the engine.
If the float was stuck when you prime the bulb you would be able to see gas leaking from the carb bulb would be hard but it you apply firm pressure you would see gas somewhere also a stuck float will cause a motor to idle bad and flood. Could be a gasket or just running a little rich. Mercs are hard to get to the carbs.
You can try to mix the fuel cleaner SeaFoam with a small amount of gas in a aux. Tank let it run if varnish is your problem this should help. If the floats are old depending on the year of the motor the E-Gas can eat them up and cause the float to sink in the bowl.
Most larger outboards have one carburetor or injector per cylinder so problems in the plumbing can cause individual cylinder dramas. Pressure reading at each carburetor or injector inlet should be the same as you measured at the fuel pump outlet and equal for all. When you tilt the motor up the carburetor bowls drain through the carburetor intake area.
Most outboards do this in my experience. You can lessen it some by removing the fuel line and running the gas from the carburetors. But you will usually get some drip when you tilt the motor up.
A good fix is a new fuel injected outboard. First remove the fuel line from the carburetor and plug it so fuel does not run out. On the very bottom of the carburetor bowl there will be a small brass cover screw using a flat screw driver open this screw and allow all gas to drain from the carburetor system.
Next close the screw and reinstall the fuel. If gas is coming out of them you most likely have a float needle THAT IS NOT SEATING AND CUTTING OFF THE FUEL FLOW TO THE FLOAT BOWL. Could be something as simple as a piece of trash or rubber fuel line piece that is holding the needleseat OPEN.
Or could be a heavy float condition due to a hole in the float. Or maybe youve been using one of the Ethanol-laced gases in your fuel tank. It is a safety hazard and may cause a fire as fuel overflows out of the carburetor on to a hot engine.
The fuel bowl within the carburetor has a float inside. This may also cause flooding if the bowl has a leak or the float is set too high. All you need to do is to replace the float.
Several things cause a carburetor to leak gas. A loose fuel line connection is easy to correct by tightening the connection at the carburetor. If the leak persists the connection fitting is probably bad and it may be time to replace the fuel line.
