Mercury outboard alarm stays on. Unplug both wires and then turn on the key switch. If the alarm continues plug the two leads NOT coming out of the tank into each other. If either of these two things makes the alarm stop replace the oil level sensor.
If the alarm continues both ways. Please post back and include your engines serial number. The temperature sensor will usually be located on the cylinder block typically near an upper cylinder.
It typically will have a brown wire. Disconnect the sensor from the brown wire–usually there is a connector or plug. IF this stops the alarm then the alarm is coming from this sensor.

Presuming your system is corected properly check to ensure the oil caps are on tight and secure and that the hoses are ok. Hope it helps John. It would depend on the alarm a steady alarm indicates an engine over heat. If the engine alarm is a series of beeps this would indicate an oil pump supply.
I have a Mercury 60 HP outboard 1991-1992 sr 0D102419 model and the engine hot buzzer stays on all the time. Even when the key is turned on the buzzer is constant not momentary as it should be per the manual. It comes on as soon as the key is turned on and stays on whether the engine is running or not.

It only happens every once in a while also my tach quit working about the same time. I reconnected the oil level assembly wire then moved the float up and down.
When the float is down it makes contact and the alarm goes off. When the float is raised the alarm does not come on. It seems that its working properly.
I clean everything up and put back together and refilled with fresh yamalube. Turn the key and no alarm. If you have a two-stroke outboard motor you must add oil to the fuel to lubricate the engine.
